The best way to make sure that your holidays remain free from stress is to make a list of things that need to be done and then stick to it. Plan your gathering ahead of time and don’t be too timid to delegate various tasks to different people. You need to know the limitations to what you can do yourself and then give other people the things to do that you won’t have time for or can’t do. Asking your guests to assist with something related to the gathering makes them feel like they are more involved. Don’t be afraid to ask them.
Get as much of the cooking done ahead that is possible. Stews and soups are the greatest holiday and winter food. They will feed a lot of people and can be made ahead of time and frozen until needed. Tarts and quiches are also foods that can be frozen until needed. They don’t even need to be made from scratch either.
You will never have to find yourself running out of appetizers if you shop for them like your main goal in life is entertaining. Make sure that you pantry is chock full of things like crackers and cookies. Consider buying things like nuts in bulk. You can mix nuts together and even cover them with maple syrup before caramelizing them in a pan. Serve these up with drinks and then pass around a platter of cheeses. Jarred pestos and tapanades are incredible dips when they are mixed with sour cream.
When it comes to beverages, stock up on mixers and sodas. You should also have coffee on hand along with a selection of teas, cider and cocoa. Make sure that if you will be serving liquor that you have plenty of wine, vodka, rum and beer.
