style clinic: Minnetonka Moccasins

Let’s start by taking a look at what I’m wearing today. Hello, cute little Minnetonka boots! And shorts. Yes, really.

Scarf: GAP
Tee: Lands’ End
Shorts: Old Navy (no longer available, sorry!)
Boots: Minnetonka Moccasins, c/o Langston’s Western Wear

This is not a typical look for me — I’m not really a boots-and-shorts kind of girl. But I’m loving this, largely because it is so atypical. Boots! And shorts! Crazy!

(Good lord.)

When I was in college, fall was the season where you wore a big heavy sweater and boots (usually LL Bean Maine Hunting Boots) with shorts. Add a big scarf and some wool socks and it’s a totally cool-weather appropriate look.

For someone who is only barely legal to drink.

I’m all about wearing age-appropriate clothes, but I am willing to define “age-appropriate” pretty broadly. I don’t believe that celebrating your 40th birthday means no more shorts or bikinis or skinny jeans; instead, I think that what is appropriate for your age has more to do with how you feel in your skin — at 20 or 40 or beyond. When I was 20, shorts with boots scared me; I loved the idea but wasn’t sure I should be baring my legs like that. At 40(plus), I’m happy with my legs. Or maybe I’m just less concerned about what anyone else thinks of them. Either way, here I am, in boots and shorts. Crazy!

I’m a big fan of Minnetonka shoes; I have a pair of old school driving mocs that I wear quite literally all the time. They are easily the most versatile casual shoe in my closet right now — or they were until these cute boots showed up. Minnetonkas are well made of soft, sturdy leather; the construction is amazing and the styles are classic. Yes, even the fringe booties. Seriously.

What do you think — are the boots working with the shorts, or is there a better way to style these? How would you wear them?

Don’t forget: Enter to win your choice of Minnetonka Moccasins (women’s, men’s or kid’s) from Langston’s Western Wear! Contest ends October 14, and the odds are in your favor. And thank you to Langston’s for sponsoring this series — they provided the boots, but all words and opinions are my own.

  1. This is funny, because until reading this I’d forgotten all about wearing shorts well into the fall in college. We did that too–even up here in MN (brrrrrr)! Though where I went to college, it was more with big oversized long-sleeved t-shirts, college-logo hooded sweatshirts, etc.

I love the Minnetonka boots, and I’d wear them just as I do all my boots: with skinny jeans or cords tucked into them, or with tights and a skirt. Oh, and always a scarf.

  2. I think you look fantastic! I’ve never had a pair of Minnetonkas but they are on my wish list for fall. I love this time of year. Shorts with sweaters is a favorite combination.

  3. Yep, there were a lot of shorts and sweaters for me, too. In fact, it’s a look that works pretty well here well into fall because, you know, it’s still not cold, but it’s getting cool enough for long sleeves in the evening! Yay!

Oh, and those pug boots are killer. That would definitely be my pick. I’d wear them with shorts and a button down or sweater now, and with skinny jeans or leggings and a long sweater in a couple of months when I won’t sweat to death. But you know where I’m really excited about them? Before and after swim class once it’s legitimately cold out. That would feel amazing.

  4. Umm. . .sorry, I don’t care for this look regardless if you are 40 or 20. I like the boots, and I like the shorts – but just not together.

  5. Ya, I’m with Liz, this look does not work for anyone (shorts and booties). Unfortunately, the ensemble appears you were running out the door and just grabbed the nearest thing for foot protection. I typically like most of your combos but this one won’t make the list.

  6. I agree with Liz and Janet – this one doesn’t work for me. And you have fantastic legs, but I still think those shorts are too short. I think longer ones are much more flattering. However, having said all that, I applaud you for feeling good in your own skin and trying something new!

  7. I have to admit, in the interest of full disclosure, that I changed before I actually left the house yesterday — I swapped the shorts for a pair of skinny cords. I just couldn’t do it, the shorts and boots — it’s not me.

But those boots are seriously so damn comfy. I’m not even kidding, you all. And super cute with the cords.

  8. I’m not into boots and shorts. You’re super cute and bonus points for being brave. Just not my style. I remember wearing lots of sweaters and sweatshirts with shorts in college. If I recall, my wardrobe pretty much consisted of sorority and fraternity t shirts. Not my best sartorial years.

Just bought my girls Minnetonka mocassins at Garnet Hill on SUPER sale yesterday (little mocs are adorable)!
