A couple of weeks ago, the always-inspiring Maggie Mason emailed to ask if I would like to do a Mighty Closet post. And of course I said yes, because yay! SO fun.
Although shooting 382 photos may have left me feeling a little crazed. GO FIGURE.
Someone needs to cut back on the coffee, clearly. Whoa.
My instructions were to shoot five outfits, including one for cocktails. I shot more than that, although I cannot remember now how many there were. 10? 50? 200??? I have no idea. It was crazy. And there were a lot of outtakes. Let’s take a look a a few of them, shall we?
Yeah, like you have a choice. Enjoy!
I bought this dress for the Alt Summit White Party. And then I wore it again for Rachel’s Oscar’s party, and for the White Party at Mom 2.0. I would seriously wear it every day if I thought I could pull it off, I love it that much.
(I also had an interesting conversation recently with a much younger fashion blogger about whether this was a dress or a shirt. I say dress, she says shirt. And now I’m worried that I am just wandering around in a blouse and no pants whenever I leave the house. Whoops.)
((The Zara site said this was a dress. So I’m sticking by my assertion. Dress!!! Very short dress, but still, dress.))
Dress: Zara
Earrings: Target
Bangles: Stella & Dot
Martini glass: Pier One
Moving on! This is my fave handbag ever, although I’ve always wondered why those J. Crew models stood around like this. Who carries a bag that way??? Not me, that’s for sure.
Blouse: J. Crew
Shorts: Old Navy
Bag: Ellington
I decided that I needed at least one shot in a Classic Fashion Blogger Pose. You know how fashion bloggers are always looking at their feet? Here you go!
Now can one of you explain why I look like I am looking for something I dropped rather than looking all pensive and chic? Fashion blogger fail.
(I”m a style bloggger, people. That’s totally different. We look right at the camera. Duh.)
Dress: J. Crew
Necklace: White House | Black Market
Shoes: LOFT
You can see the entire post — and the final photos, including the ones where I pretend to be a J. Crew catalog model — at Mighty Girl. A big, big thank you to Maggie for inviting me to participate, and to her readers for being so darn nice.

Awesome! Did Rita do your photos?
No, although she loaned me the sheets for the backdrop. I shot all 300+ myself, with a remote. I am not even kidding.
Holy cow. You are amazing. With a remote. NUTS.
OMfreakingG.
These are your outtakes? They are still perfection! I want outtakes….one eyed no smile serious outtakes!!!
you know I loooooove that white dress. Love.
I love the armload of striped shirts! I have quite the collection myself and I’m almost afraid to count how many I own. I’m just glad there’s no Hoarders: Breton Stripes show or else I’ll have to go in hiding haha!
Katie, I came thisclose to buying another striped tee the other day. My justification, of course, was that I don’t have a red stripe and I neeeeeed it.
What I neeeeed is an intervention. Help.
Ah! I love the justifying! My process goes like this: “I can wear it with this…and that…and and OKAY FINE I JUST WANT IT”
Anddddd this is how I own a stockpile of striped shirts (I have yet to find a good red striped one). It is my well-appointed (crazy?) legacy, I guess.
Ha- fashion blogger pose “I look fabulous but am feigning humbleness”
EXACTLY! Although I’m not kidding, every single shot where I tried that pose, I looked like I had dropped my car keys on the floor. “Where are they? Oh, right there!”
Sheesh.
Love the picture with the stripes! It’s such a fun self-portrait.
Also love the cocktail dress with the pink shoes- I have similar pieces, and they will be perfect together for a wedding next month!
I wandered over from Maggie’s site, and now I have to clean out my closet. Super.
Kidding. Love your blog and am now inspired to clean out my closet.
My work here is done.
I love this! Also, channeling you yesterday, I wore my short shorts out. There was no other choice in this heat!
The fashion blogger pose always drives me nuts. Kudos for you for trying. Double kudos for realizing it wasn’t for you.
(You know how much I love that you were featured already so I’m not going to delve into that right now. But way to go, friend.)
You are gorgeous! I have to admit I do the fashion blogger pose a lot, but it’s not because I’m trying to be cool or anything. I just get tired and start to feel awkward staring directly at the camera for too long!
I discovered your blog through Mighty Girl and I am so glad that I did! You have perfectly perfect style!

I love the Mighty Closet post! I love how you succinctly yet thoroughly summed up your style philosophy! I also noticed how it seems like, for the most part, you stick with just a few brands. There are so many great stores out there, but it gets completely overwhelming for me when I try to keep track of them all. Sticking to just a few that you know and love and that work for you consistently really does seem like a GREAT idea!
BUT WAIT. What about the quintessential “crossed legs I might have to pee” fashion pose? Never forget that one.
You are adorable.
Very disappointed that the martini glass in pic #1 is empty. Dress is super fab, though
Just discovered your blog thanks to the Mighty Closet post — love it! This is a great post, I am seriously coveting the white dress. I had to laugh a bit because it made me think of a recent Tim Gunn Facebook post: If you have to ask whether a clothing item is a top or a dress, it’s a top. Which is genius, of course. But, in this case I agree — that is definitely a dress!
Allison, that’s so funny — AND SO TRUE. Sadly, it had never crossed my mind that this was anything BUT a dress, although now I’m a little worried. But not worried enough to stop wearing it without pants.
My mother got married in a top that she wore as a dress (Hello 1969!) and so I think your dress that doesn’t in any way, shape, or form look like a top is good to go. I too covet that and the blue dress. And the JCrew skirt that I finally decided to buy only to discover that they don’t seem to be selling it anymore. Argh!
