get dressed doesn’t have to mean get dressed up

Welcome to Day One of 30 Days of Getting Dressed! I thought I’d get you started with a look at what I wore this weekend.

Getting dressed on the weekend can be tough because a typical weekend veers from the uber casual (working in the yard, going to kid sporting events, lazing around in pajamas) to the super dressy (church, date night, office parties). This means that when I’m out and about with my kids on a weekend day, I see lots of women running errands in their workout clothes because they’re just waiting until it’s time to get dressed for whatever they’re doing at night. Or, conversely, I see women who clearly put on something nice for church and then went home and took it off and threw on their workout clothes.

How about we find some good middle ground here? That doesn’t involve workout clothes, I mean.

Getting dressed doesn’t have to mean getting dressed up — casual clothes can be cute, too. Save your workout clothes for actually working out, and find some other alternative for all those parts of the weekend when you’re not shoveling dirt or running a 5K. A great pair of shorts and a fitted tee or button-down are perfect for hanging out with the kids; add a belt and a necklace and you’re dressed! And still able to unload groceries or shoot baskets in the yard or run the vacuum — or whatever the weekend brings.

What’s your weekend strategy for getting dressed?

  1. Today’s outfit is a Gap tee and J. Crew skirt (the City Mini — it’s actually navy, AND it’s on sale in store right now). Necklace is also J. Crew. Of course.

  2. Just bought that J Crew linen mini and noticed the tag suggested dry cleaning. Because I know you regularly ignore laundering suggestions, how do you clean the skirt?

    • This is the first time I’ve worn it, so I haven’t had to cross that bridge yet, but I’m toying with hand-washing it. Typically unless the label says “dry clean ONLY” you can hand wash. I’ll let you know how that goes.

      • Susan, are your other City Minis a different material (non-dry-clean)? I ask bc as you know I want that skirt! But I might decline if the City Mini only comes in dry-clean-only fabrics.

  3. I’m hoping you’ll tell me where you found the chambray shirt you’re wearing in the last post with what I think are city capris in bright dahlia. Great combination!
