a list is all I can manage just now

Oh, hey, Internet! Whatcha been up to? I’ve been working and running and helping kids with school reports that they waited until the LAST POSSIBLE MINUTE to start working on. Which is always fun for everyone.

Seriously, I’ve been crazy busy with a whole bunch of totally uninteresting things, and a few things that are kind of interesting. I’ll spare you the former. You’re welcome. Here’s a quick rundown of the fun stuff.

1. I bought this at J. Crew yesterday, on sale AND 30% off. Go me. And yes, I was excited when I realized that it was J. Crew Collection. Because I’m shallow like that. (Plus it has POCKETS you all! Whee!)J. Crew

2. I’m running a half marathon in 11 days. I’m ready; I ran 15.5 miles a couple weekends ago, and PR’d a 10K on Sunday. I’d like to finish in under two hours; I think maybe I can do it. We’ll see.

3. I finally got a new iPhone. It’s been three years, you all! The last straw was when every single camera app I had stopped working over the weekend. Who cares that I can’t make a phone call — I NEED MY CAMERAS! Get ready for a million pictures of random stuff. You’re welcome.

4. I’ve got some crazy insomnia thing going on; I’m wide awake every night for about an hour, from 2-3 am. It’s gotten so bad that it’s not even really bothering me any more. Except that it is because omg I just want to SLEEEEEEP. Ugh.

5. I’m going to Miami in two weeks, for the Mom 2.0 Summit. I’m speaking on a panel about what comes after the mom blog; I’m also partnering with Ecover to offer styling tips. If you’re going to be in Miami, come talk to me about how to make your closet work for you. It’ll be fun!

What have you been up to? (Real post coming tomorrow, I promise. No, seriously.)

  1. Oooh, I would SO LOVE to hear learn what comes after a mom blog, but I cannot go to Miami. Boo. Maybe you can write a post about it afterward?

  2. I’m running my first half in May, but my training schedule only calls for one 10 mile training run maximum. Do you think it’s necessary to go farther to be ready?

    • Let me preface this by saying that I am NOT a running expert, at all. Not by a long shot. ;)

The idea behind the 10 mile long run comes from the traditional marathon training program, where the longest run is 20 miles; the theory is that you don’t need to push yourself the whole distance to be ready to run that distance on race day. I think you could totally do a half if the furthest you’ve ever run is 10 miles; you hear about people doing it all the time.

I really believe, though, that the half is easier and less stressful (mentally and physically) if you’ve done something closer to 13.1 — even just 12 miles — before race day. The longer run teaches you how to pace yourself, which is really important and can be hard to learn. If you have the time, I’d try to do at least one 12 miler before race day.

I’ve done the 15 mile run twice, both times in the weeks leading up to a half marathon, because knowing that I can run 15 (and not die) makes running 13 seem easy in comparison. This is a strategy that really works for me, but it’s not necessarily one I would recommend willy nilly to anyone else, if that makes sense.

  3. Regarding the insomnia–I fight sleeplessness off and on and have for about 30 years. I find that exercise helps–which you do plenty of! How about a yoga meditation style exercise just before bed or if you wake in the night. It does help me. Takes practice, but worth it! Also, my kids are both in their 20′s and I still spend some sleepless hours worrying about them. It never fades, just shifts.
