weekend reads

I’m still — still! — cleaning out my closet; right now I’m trying to figure out how to recreate all four of these looks with pieces I already own. Also, I’m wondering about the denim jacket — cool, or like so five years ago? Discuss.

(I do not own a denim jacket; I can’t bring myself to buy one because I cannot decide if I would really wear it or if it would just hang in my closet. Because maybe it’s just so five years ago, you know?)

  1. I like denim jackets in theory. But I always worry about wearing one with jeans. I just don’t want it to be overkill. That said, I have a denim blazer and a denim jacket, both of which look cute over summer dresses. The blazer actually looks pretty good with dress pants. I have them, but I rarely wear them because I’m usually wearing jeans.

  2. YES to denim jackets. I love them, and I think you can do denim-on-denim as long as the denim colors are significantly different (that’s not a hard and fast rule, but it seems to work most of the time). Old Navy currently has some nice classic ones for reasonable prices, and I’ve had luck finding good ones on ebay, too. Take the plunge!

  3. I just cannot do the denim jacket. It will always feel too 1980s and 1990s to me. Also, I NEVER see anyone (in real life) wearing one–not even my most stylish and hip friends. So…I think I would feel silly.

  4. I have a khaki colored and a white twill jacket that looks like your standard “jean jacket” I got one 4 yrs ago and another last yr. The styling hits at the waist and is fitted so it’s not the slouchy jean jacket of the 80s and 90s. They are nice to wear as a layering piece in the spring.

  5. Just yesterday I broke out my trusty denim jacket to wear with grey skinny cords, a yellow and white striped tee, a textured yellow scarf, and pops of dainty turquoise jewelry. I received compliments on the look and I love my Gap jean jacket. I just checked the tag and it is from Spring 2000…lol. I don’t wear it often (a few times every spring and fall) but I just love how soft and perfect it has become.

  6. I love denim jacket, I never wore it with jeans though. It is kinda too much for me. I think fitted denim jacket is very cool. I bought a size smaller than my normal blazer size and leave the front open. I think it is more stylish wearing denim jacket unbuttoned. :)

  7. I wear mine quite often! I have a very faded one I bought for dirt cheap at a Talbots that was closing last year. I wear it most frequently with black trousers to work, and with white capris or walking shorts in the spring/summer.

  8. I LOVE my denim jacket- it is 10 years old from Old Navy and wear it with everything… in fact it was one of the only jackets that made it through my big I’m moving halfway across the country purge.

  9. I found a fitted denim jacket on clearance a few years ago that I just fell in love with. I’m not crazy about the denim-on-denim look so I wear my jacket with khaki pants, crapris, and walking shorts. I like the look of a denim jacket with a casual dress, but I haven’t tried it yet.

  10. I’ll chime in to support denim jackets as well. I would never do denim jacket with jeans, but I think they look darling with pants of other colors – especially khaki and jewelry to dress them up. I always get compliments when I wear it, too. I feel inspired to try it with a dress now!

  11. Funny, I’ve always had one or two denim jackets in my closet. Over the years, I’ve always parted with them, thinking, “Eh, I’m over these, right?”
Eventually, I regret letting them go, and purchase new ones. I’ve finally settled on the one that works for me.

White denim jackets feel too fussy for my taste. A very dark one looks good. A not-too-dark and not-too-pale stonewashed one is just right.

Now, I have a lovely J. Crew one that’s been in my closet for at least a few years. I love it…but I’m a sucker for that hippie-chick, Free People, long-flowey-skirt-with-denim-jacket look.

I also have an old (gosh, it has to be at least 25 years old), super pale jacket from an old boyfriend. It’s by Guess. It’s too big to be cute on me…but every now and then I’ll toss it on. I tell myself I look a bit like Drew Barrymore in The Wedding Singer when I wear it. :)

  12. I’m chiming in to say YES to the denim jacket, as long as it’s fitted and you don’t attempt wearing it with blue jeans. I wear mine with my olive green cargo pants and with casual dresses. I like it best with the sleeves rolled up a bit.

  13. I have a denim jacket that I wear sparingly. I think I might have had inspiration from here on that.

I think, as long as you’re happy with it and are confident (and aren’t wearing it with jeans, good gravy), then it is “now.”

  14. A denim jacket is a must have. I rep for CAbi, and we have a fabulous shrunken jacket this season, that looks great on everyone. Also, pairing denim with denim can be done, if done right. It also works great with dressier pieces, similar to dressing up your top, when wearing jeans on your botton half. Throw a denim jacket on with a cute sundress, or skirt and tee in cooler weather.
