A necklace is a simple way to upgrade the most casual outfit — even if you’re just wearing jeans and a tee, toss on a necklace and you suddenly look pulled together and polished. But how do you know which necklace to pair with which neckline? Here’s a simple cheat sheet. You’re welcome!
A lariat is perhaps the most versatile piece you can own, because you can wear it so many ways. Loop it short with a crew neck, or tie it long with a V neck; wear the long ends in the front or in the back (or even on the side). The trick with any necklace is to choose a shape that mimics the shape of your neckline and embellishes the silhouette you’re already creating with your clothes. Let’s talk about three common necklines — crewneck, scoop neck, and V neck — and about what shape necklace works best with each.
Crewneck: Bib Necklace
A crew neckline can be tricky; a crewneck is most flattering on slim girls with small chests. Unfortunately, if you are a slim girl with a small chest, a crewneck can make you look like a boy. Balance out the crew with a bib necklace, one that sits right at the top of your tee or sweater, to create some drama over what is essentially a pretty boring neckline.
V Neck: Pendant Necklace
A V-shaped neckline is universally flattering; you can opt for a tee or sweater with a V neck, or a collared shirt with the top few buttons undone. The V shape draws the eye up toward your face and slims your neck. To keep this line uncluttered, choose a necklace that follows the line of your top — a simple pendant drop, for example.
Scoop Neck: Round Necklace
As with the crew and V necklines, pair a scoop neck top with a necklace that follows the line of the garment. Choose either a necklace that will fall above the top of your shirt, like the jade drop piece above, or one that falls below, like the lapis chain below. No matter what length you opt for, go either longer or shorter than the actual neckline — or do both! A scoop neck is ideal for layering necklaces, as long as they’re all essentially round in shape.
